They do this by absorbing the force when the knee hits the ground, the pads help shield the patella from serious injuries such as fractures, dislocation or cartilage damage. Knee pads are also typically made from a material that will reduce friction so that when a defender is diving for a ball, they dont have to worry about skinning their knees.

Court Shoes
The purpose of court shoes is to create as much friction as possible against the volleyball court. Having shoes with good grip allows you to keep yourself stable on the ground and to move quickly around the court without having to worry about slipping and injuring yourself. This is especially helpful for blocking where the blocker must react to what is happening on the other side of the court, and then move from side to side along the front of the net quickly and efficiently, these quick reactions would not be possible if the shoes did not have a good grip, which is why court shoes are a staple in the volleyball world.
